The 3 Main Reasons for a Partial Refund

1. The “MBS Schedule Fee” Gap (Most Likely)

The Australian Government has a list called the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS). It sets a “fair price” for every medical service (e.g., Item 23 for a standard GP visit).

  • The Government Price (MBS): In April 2026, the MBS fee for a standard GP visit is $42.85.
  • The Doctor’s Price: Many private clinics in Melbourne CBD charge $80.00 to $100.00.
  • The Result: Allianz refunds 100% of the MBS fee ($42.85). You are responsible for the remaining $37.15 to $57.15. This is called the “Gap Fee,” and it is not refundable.

2. 85% vs. 100% Rebate

While Allianz covers 100% of the MBS fee for General Practitioners (GPs), they only cover 85% of the MBS fee for Specialists (like a Dermatologist or Gynecologist) and X-rays/Blood tests.

  • If a specialist charges $200 and the MBS fee is $100, Allianz pays $85 (85% of $100). You pay the $115 difference.

3. Non-Clinical Fees

If your bill includes items like “Administrative Fees,” “Medical Certificate Fees,” or “Processing Fees,” Allianz will not refund these at all. They only pay for the “consultation” (the time you spent with the doctor).

How to Get a $0 Appointment Next Time

You can avoid the gap fee entirely by finding a Direct Billing provider. These doctors have a special agreement with Allianz to accept only the $42.85 as full payment.

  1. Use the Allianz MyHealth App: Open the app and use the “Find a Doctor” tool.
  2. Filter for “Direct Billing”: Look for clinics with the Allianz partner logo.
  3. Confirm at the Desk: Before your appointment, ask: “Do you offer Direct Billing for Allianz OSHC so there is no out-of-pocket gap fee?”

The “Metro Tunnel” Celebration Tip

If you are currently in the CBD for the Metro Tunnel opening celebrations, many city clinics are charging higher “premium” rates due to high demand.

  • Avoid the Surge: If you just need a prescription or a basic check-up, use the Telehealth service in your Allianz MyHealth app. In 2026, Allianz offers 100% direct-billed video consults with no gap fee, saving you that $50 out-of-pocket cost.

Check Your Item Number

Look at your receipt for the “Item Number.” If it is Item 23, you should have received exactly $42.85 back. If you received less, check your bank details in the Allianz portal—sometimes a small “processing fee” from your bank can eat into your refund if your account isn’t set up correctly for OSHC deposits.
