1. The Bridging Visa Trap (BVA vs. BVB)

Before worrying about the health exam, check your current visa status. In 2026, most 485 applicants are on a Bridging Visa A (BVA).

  • The BVA Rule: If you leave Australia on a BVA, it is cancelled the moment you depart. You will not be able to return to Australia, and your $4,600 application could be in jeopardy.
  • The Solution: You must apply for and be granted a Bridging Visa B (BVB) before you leave. The BVB allows you to leave and re-enter Australia for a specified period (usually 3–6 months).

2. Can I Do My Medical Exam Overseas?

If you have already left Australia on a valid BVB (or if your student visa is still active), you can complete your medical exam in your home country.

  • HAP ID Portability: Your HAP ID is universal. You do not have to use Bupa in Australia.
  • Panel Physicians: You must use an approved Panel Physician in the country you are visiting. The Department of Home Affairs maintains a list of these clinics worldwide.
  • Digital Syncing: Once the offshore doctor completes the exam, they upload the results to the eMedical system just like an Australian doctor would. Your ImmiAccount will update automatically.

3. The “28-Day” Deadline Risk

When Home Affairs issues your HAP ID, they usually give you a 28-day deadline to complete the exam.

  • If you are overseas: Ensure you can get an appointment at an approved panel clinic within that timeframe.
  • If you can’t: You must log in to your ImmiAccount and upload a “Letter of Intention” or your appointment confirmation to show that you are complying, just from a different location.

4. Impact on Processing Times

In 2026, traveling while a health exam is pending can sometimes slow down your application:

  • MOC Referrals: If your results show an issue and need to be referred to a Medical Officer of the Commonwealth (MOC), being overseas can make it harder to attend follow-up specialist appointments if requested.
  • Biosecurity/TB Risk: If you travel to a country with a high risk of Tuberculosis (TB) for more than 3 months, the Department may require a fresh chest X-ray upon your return, even if you did one before you left.
