To check your study restrictions while on a bridging visa, you must use the Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) system. VEVO is the Australian government’s official real-time database that displays the current “in-effect” conditions of your visa, including any limitations on education.

How to Check Your Conditions via VEVO

  1. Access VEVO: Visit the official Department of Home Affairs VEVO portal or download the myVEVO app on your smartphone.
  2. Prepare Your Credentials: You will need your:
    • Reference Number: This is typically your Visa Grant Number (found on your grant letter) or your Transaction Reference Number (TRN) (found on your online application receipt).
    • Travel Document: Your current passport or ImmiCard details.
    • Date of Birth.
  3. Perform the Check: Enter your details into the portal. The system will display your current “in-effect” visa. If your bridging visa is active, it will be listed here.
  4. Review the “Conditions” Section: Look specifically for a section labeled “Study entitlements” or “Visa conditions.”
    • If you are permitted to study, it will be stated clearly.
    • If there are restrictions (such as “No Study” or “Must maintain enrollment in a specific course”), they will be listed as numbered conditions (e.g., Condition 8501, 8201).

Important Notes on Bridging Visa Study Rights

  • Bridging Visas are Not Automatic: Study rights on a bridging visa are often “inherited” from your previously held substantive visa. For example, if you held a Student Visa before your bridging visa became active, you likely retain study rights. However, if your previous visa was a Visitor Visa, you may be restricted from studying full-time.
  • VEVO Only Shows “In-Effect” Visas: Your bridging visa usually only becomes “in-effect” once your previous substantive visa expires. If your substantive visa is still active, VEVO may show that visa’s conditions instead. Always check the specific grant letter provided to you when the bridging visa was issued.
  • Requesting a Change: If VEVO shows that you are restricted from studying but you have a genuine need to do so, you can apply to the Department of Home Affairs to have your visa conditions varied. This is not guaranteed and requires supporting documentation.
