Navigating Australian university grading can be confusing. If you are preparing for the 2026 graduate job market, you have likely encountered two primary metrics: GPA (Grade Point Average) and WAM (Weighted Average Mark).

While both serve as indicators of academic performance, they are calculated differently and carry different weight depending on who is looking at your transcript.

Understanding the Difference

  • WAM (Weighted Average Mark): This is the average of the actual numeric marks (0–100) you received in all your subjects, weighted by the credit point value of each unit. Because it uses the specific percentage earned, it is highly granular.
  • GPA (Grade Point Average): This converts your marks into a standardized point scale (usually 0–7). Because it “compresses” marks into grade bands (e.g., both 86% and 99% might result in the same grade points), it is less sensitive to small fluctuations in your performance.

Which One Do Employers Care About?

For the vast majority of graduate employers, it depends on the industry and the size of the company.

1. The “Big Four” and Professional Services

Large organizations—including the Big Four accounting firms (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG), top-tier law firms, and investment banks—often use academic metrics as a screening filter.

  • The Threshold: They typically set a “floor” for applicants. A Credit average (65%+ WAM or ~5.0 GPA) is often the minimum, but competitive graduate programs frequently prefer a Distinction average (75%+ WAM or ~6.0 GPA).
  • Why they use it: These companies receive thousands of applications. Screening by WAM or GPA is an automated way to prioritize candidates who have demonstrated consistency, attention to detail, and the ability to perform under pressure.

2. Government and Public Service

The Australian Public Service (APS) and various state government graduate programs rely heavily on these metrics to ensure a baseline of academic competence. They generally look for a stable history of academic achievement, with WAM being the more common metric in Go8 (Group of Eight) university settings.

3. Creative, Tech, and Startup Industries

In fields like marketing, design, software engineering, or tech startups, WAM and GPA matter significantly less. In these sectors, employers prioritize:

  • Your Portfolio: Real-world examples of your work (GitHub repositories, design links, published writing).
  • Projects: Demonstrated experience in building products or leading initiatives.
  • Internships: Practical experience gained during your degree.

Does WAM Always Trump GPA?

WAM is generally considered the more “precise” measure because it doesn’t mask differences between high achievers. For example, a student who consistently scores 92% (High Distinction) will have a higher WAM than a student who scores 76% (Distinction), even though both might receive the same maximum grade points on a 7-point GPA scale.

This is why WAM is the preferred metric for:

  • Honours Admissions: Universities require specific WAM thresholds for entry into Honours and PhD programs.
  • Competitive Scholarships: Awards and prizes are almost always ranked by WAM to differentiate between top-tier candidates.

How to Leverage Your Results on Your Resume

Regardless of whether your university highlights WAM or GPA, follow these best practices for your 2026 job applications:

  • Be Strategic: If your WAM is strong, display it clearly. If your GPA is your “better” number, highlight that instead.
  • Provide Context: Don’t just list a number. If your university doesn’t use a standard 7-point scale, add a note: “GPA 6.2/7.0 (Equivalent to Distinction average).”
  • Focus on the “Trend”: Employers value improvement. If you started with lower marks but finished your degree with straight Distinctions, highlight your “Upward academic trajectory” in your cover letter.
  • Prioritize Experience: Remember that academic marks are a gatekeeper, not a guarantee. Once you pass the initial screening threshold, your interview performance, soft skills, and industry experience become the deciding factors.
