Waiting for your Australian Federal Police (AFP) check to clear can be the most stressful part of a 485 or PR application. In 2026, while most digital certificates are processed within 48 hours, complex checks or manual verifications can take much longer.

1. Accessing the AFP Status Portal

The AFP does not require you to log in to a complex account to check your status. They provide a dedicated Public Status Portal.

  • The Link: Navigate to the official AFP National Police Checks page and select “Check the progress of a National Police Check.”
  • What You Need:
    1. Reference Number: Found on your payment receipt (it usually starts with your initials or a specific numeric string).
    2. Date of Birth: Must match the date used in your application.

2. Understanding Your Status Update

When you enter your details into the portal, you will typically see one of four statuses:

StatusWhat it Means in 2026
ReceivedYour application is in the queue. No officer has started the manual review yet.
In ProgressAn officer is currently verifying your ID or checking criminal databases across states.
FinalisedThe check is complete. A digital PDF has been generated and sent.
Mailed / Dispatched(Hard Copy only) Your physical certificate is with Australia Post.

3. 2026 Processing Timelines: When to Worry

If your status has been “In Progress” for more than a few days, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have a criminal record.

  • Digital Certificates: Most are sent within 48 hours. If it’s been 5 days, check your “Junk/Spam” folder for an email from afp.gov.au.
  • Name Match Delays: If you have a very common name (e.g., “Amit Kumar” or “John Smith”), your check may take 10–15 business days because an officer must manually confirm you aren’t a different person with the same name.
  • Fingerprint Checks: If your visa specifically required fingerprints, the timeline is 15 to 30 business days.

4. The “15-Day Rule” for Enquiries

In 2026, the AFP will not respond to status enquiries unless 15 business days have passed since your application.

  • If 15 days have passed: Use the National Police Check Enquiry Form on the AFP website.
  • Do not call the police station: Local police stations cannot see the progress of an AFP Federal check; it is handled by the Criminal Records department in Canberra.

5. Pro-Tip: Tracking for the 485 Visa

If you are tracking your AFP check to upload it to ImmiAccount:

  • You do not need the physical certificate to lodge your 485 visa. You can lodge with the AFP Receipt/Reference Number.

Once the Status Portal shows “Finalised,” download the PDF and upload it to your visa application immediately. Do not wait for a hard copy in the mail.

If you are currently on a Bridging Visa A (BVA) and need to travel home for an emergency, a wedding, or business, you must obtain a Bridging Visa B (BVB) before you leave.

As of May 2026, departing Australia without a BVB will result in the cancellation of your BVA and may prevent you from returning to Australia while your main visa is still processing.

1. 2026 Costs and Processing Times

In 2026, the Department of Home Affairs has streamlined BVB processing, but the “Golden Rule” remains: Apply at least 2–3 weeks before your flight.

  • Application Fee: $190 AUD (non-refundable).
  • Processing Time: Typically 1 to 7 business days, though it can take up to 4 weeks during peak holiday periods (Christmas/New Year).
  • Validity: The travel facility is usually granted for 3 to 12 months depending on your reason for travel.

2. Eligibility Checklist

You can only apply for a BVB if:

  1. You are physically in Australia.
  2. You already hold a Bridging Visa A (BVA) or a Bridging Visa B (BVB)
  3. You have a pending substantive visa application (e.g., Partner 820, Skilled 190/491, or Student 500).
  4. You have a “substantial” reason for travel (Tourism, family visits, business, and emergencies are all generally accepted in 2026).

3. Step-by-Step: Applying via ImmiAccount

The paper-based Form 1006 is now rarely used; 99% of 2026 applications are lodged digitally.

Step 1: Access Your Application

Log in to your ImmiAccount. Locate your pending substantive visa application (the one you are currently waiting for).

Step 2: Select ‘Bridging Visa’

In the ‘Related Links’ or ‘Action’ menu of your main application, click on “Application for a Bridging Visa”. This links the BVB directly to your current case.

Step 3: Provide Travel Evidence

You will be asked for your intended travel dates and your reason for travel. In 2026, it is highly recommended to upload:

  • Flight Itinerary: Tentative dates are okay, but a confirmed booking is stronger.
  • Support Evidence: A wedding invitation, medical letter (for sick relatives), or a brief letter explaining your “need for a mental break/holiday.”

Step 4: Pay and Submit

Pay the $190 fee. You must remain in Australia until the BVB is granted. If you leave while it is still “Received,” you risk being locked out.

4. Critical 2026 “Travel Traps” to Avoid

  • The “Decision” Rule: You must be in Australia both when you apply and when the BVB is granted. If you fly out before the grant email arrives, your BVA may cease.
  • Return Date: You must return to Australia before the “Travel End Date” on your BVB grant letter. If you are stuck overseas past this date, you cannot “extend” a BVB. You would need to apply for a completely different visa (like a Tourist Visa) to get back in.

Work Rights: Your BVB will carry the same work conditions as your BVA. If your BVA allows full work rights (common for Partner and Skilled applicants), your BVB will too.

In 2026, the question of address proof for an Indian Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) depends entirely on which address you are proving: your current residence in Australia or your permanent address in India.

For most Indian graduates in Australia, the Rent Agreement is a highly contested document. While technically listed by the Ministry of External Affairs, its acceptance at VFS Global Australia follows very specific “2026 Strictures.”

1. Proving Your Australian Address (At VFS Global)

If you are applying for a PCC at a VFS center in Australia (Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, etc.), you must prove you live within that center’s jurisdiction.

  • Is a Rent Agreement Accepted? Yes, but with conditions.
  • The 2026 Requirement: VFS Global Australia typically prefers a Driver’s Licence or Utility Bill (Electricity/Gas/Water). If you use a Rent Agreement, it must be a formal, signed residential tenancy agreement.
  • The “Letterhead” Alternative: In 2026, many applicants find it easier to provide a Bank Statement (with the Australian address) or an Official University Letter if they are living in student accommodation.

2. Proving a New Indian Address (On Passport Seva)

If the address you want printed on your PCC (or the one you currently reside at in India) is different from the one in your passport, you must provide proof of this “Present Address.”

  • The Rule: According to the Passport Seva 2026 Guidelines, a Rent Agreement is an acceptable proof of address.
  • The “Registered” Clause: To be valid for a PCC, the Rent Agreement must be registered under Section 17 of the Registration Act, 1908. A simple “Notarized” agreement on a $100 stamp paper is often rejected by the Regional Passport Office (RPO) during the verification stage.
  • The 1-Year Rule: The agreement must show that you have been residing at that address for at least one continuous year at the time of application.

3. Acceptable Address Proofs in 2026 (Ranked by Reliability)

If you are worried your Rent Agreement might be rejected, consider these higher-authority documents instead:

RankDocument TypeReliability
1Aadhaar CardHighest (Fastest processing)
2Utility Bills (Electricity/Water/Landline)High (Must be in your name)
3Bank Passbook (Public Sector Banks)High (Must have a photo)
4Registered Rent AgreementMedium (Subject to RPO scrutiny)
5Spouse’s PassportMedium (Address must match exactly)

4. Common Pitfalls for 2026 Applicants

  • The “Parental” Trap: If the rent agreement is in your father’s or mother’s name, it is not valid for your PCC unless you provide additional proof of relationship and an affidavit.
  • Handwritten Agreements: In 2026, all documents must be clear, typed, and digitally verifiable. Handwritten rent receipts are no longer accepted as supporting evidence.
  • The VEVO Factor: For your Australian address proof, VFS will always cross-reference your address with your VEVO (Visa Entitlement Verification Online) status. Ensure your address is updated with the Department of Home Affairs before applying.

5. Summary: Should You Use a Rent Agreement?

  • In Australia: Only use it if you don’t have an Australian Driver’s Licence or a Bank Statement.
  • In India: Only use it if it is Registered (not just notarized) and you have lived there for over 12 months. If you have an Aadhaar card with the correct address, always use that instead—it bypasses many manual verification steps.

Following the March 1, 2026 fee hike, the primary application charge has doubled to $4,600 for most applicants.

A common but fatal error is using the wrong AFP Code on your police check. Because the AFP check is a “Time of Lodgement” requirement, providing an invalid one can make your entire application “invalid,” leading to a refused visa and a non-refundable $4,600 fee.

1. The $4,600 “Code 33” Trap

When applying for an Australian Federal Police (AFP) check for a 485 visa, you must select Code 33 (Immigration/Citizenship – for supply to the Department of Home Affairs).

  • The Error: Many students accidentally select Code 20 (Commonwealth Employment) or a general check.
  • The Consequence: In 2026, Home Affairs considers any code other than 33 as a failure to meet the character requirement at the time of application.
  • The Loss: Because you didn’t meet the mandatory criteria when you clicked “Submit,” the Department can refuse the visa. Under 2026 rules, visa application charges (VAC) are not refunded for refusals caused by applicant error.

2. Why You Can’t “Just Fix It Later”

The 485 visa is a “one-shot” visa. Once you lodge:

  • Strict Timing: You must have already applied for the AFP check before you lodge the 485.
  • The Evidence Chain: You are required to upload the AFP receipt or certificate as part of the lodgement. If that receipt shows you applied for the wrong code, you have technically not applied for the correct police check.
  • No Second Chances: If your student visa has already expired and you are on a Bridging Visa when the refusal happens, you may not be able to lodge a second 485 application due to Section 48 bar restrictions.

3. 2026 Cost Comparison: The Price of a Mistake

ItemCorrect ApplicationApplication with Wrong AFP Code
Visa Fee (Primary)$4,600$4,600 (LOST)
AFP Check Fee$56 (Code 33)$56 (Wrong Code)
Total RiskSuccessful Visa$4,656 + Potential Deportation

4. How to Rescue Your Application (Before it’s too late)

If you have already lodged your 485 visa with the wrong AFP code, do not wait for the Case Officer to find it:

  1. Apply for a New AFP Immediately: Use Code 33 and get a new receipt.
  2. Upload a “Notification of Correct Answer”: Use Form 1023 (Notification of Incorrect Answer) or a detailed cover letter in ImmiAccount.
  3. Explain the Error: Attach the new, correct AFP receipt. While this is not a guarantee (as the requirement was “at time of lodgement”), 2026 Case Officers are more likely to show leniency if you proactively fix the error before they audit the file.

The short answer is no, your PCC address does not have to match your passport address, but there is a major catch: if they don’t match, you must provide additional proof of the “new” address. The address you put on your PCC application is where the police will physically go to verify your character. If that is different from what is printed on your passport, the system treats it as a “Change of Particulars.”

1. The “Present Address” Rule (2026 Update)

The Passport Seva system asks for your Present Address. This is the address where you currently live (if applying in India) or your last known residence where you have “roots” (if applying from abroad).

  • If they match: The process is typically faster because the police station is already linked to your passport file.
  • If they don’t match: You must select the “Yes” button on the “Is present address different from passport?” question. This triggers a requirement for Additional Address Proof.

2. Required Proofs for Address Mismatch

If you are applying for a PCC at an address not listed on your passport, you must provide one of the following 2026-approved documents:

  • Aadhaar Card: The most preferred document (must match the new address).
  • Voter ID / Rent Agreement: Must be a registered agreement, not just a notarized one.
  • Utility Bills: Electricity, water, or gas bills (last 3 months).
  • Parental Proof (Expats Only): If you are abroad, you can use your parent’s address proof plus a notarized letter confirming your relationship.

3. Scenario Guide: Which Address to Use?

Your SituationWhich Address to Use on PCC Form?Impact on Verification
Living at Passport AddressUse the Passport Address.Standard verification; usually faster.
Moved to a New CityUse your Current City/Address.Police will visit your current home. You must provide local proof.
Applying from AustraliaUse your Last Indian Address.Police in India will visit that address. A relative should be there to assist.
Passport has Foreign AddressUse your Indian “Permanent” Address.High scrutiny; you must provide proof of ties to that Indian residence.

4. The “Police Station” Trap

In 2026, the PCC application requires you to manually select your Police Station

  • Critical: This selection must match the jurisdiction of your Present Address, not your passport address.
  • The Risk: If you put your passport address but select a police station near your new home, the application will be rejected or returned as “Incomplete Jurisdiction.”

5. 2026 “Pro-Tip” for Expats

If you are an Indian national in Australia or the UAE:

  • The police verification will be conducted at the Indian address you provide.

Coordination: Ensure a family member at that Indian address has a copy of your application and your passport (first and last pages). The police often ask for these during the physical visit.

In 2026, the question of whether to part with your passport is the biggest logistical hurdle for Indian graduates. The answer is yes—for Indian nationals, the original passport is a mandatory requirement for the PCC application at VFS Global Australia.

Unlike some visa applications where a certified copy suffices, the Indian High Commission requires your physical passport to verify your identity and, in many cases, to “link” the PCC service to your travel document.

1. The 2026 Submission Rule

According to the VFS Global 2026 PCC Checklist, Indian nationals must submit their current original Indian passport along with their application.

  • In-Person Applications: You must bring the original passport to your appointment. VFS will verify it and, in most jurisdictions, retain it until the process is complete.
  • Postal Applications: You must mail the original passport inside your application package. Self-attested photocopies are not accepted as a substitute for the original document.

2. Passport Retention: How Long Will VFS Keep It?

In 2026, the “retention period” depends on where your passport was originally issued:

  • If issued in Australia: VFS usually retains the passport for 3–5 business days. It is then sent back to you via secure courier along with your PCC (if the “Same Day” or “Fast Track” verification applies).
  • If issued in India: Your passport may be held for a longer period (often up to 4 weeks) if a full police verification in India is triggered.

Important Note: You will not have your passport during this time. Do not book any international travel or domestic flights that require a passport as ID while your PCC is in progress.

3. Special Cases: Foreign Passport Holders

If you are an Ex-Indian national (now holding an Australian or other foreign passport), the rules are different:

  • Do you submit your original foreign passport? No. You only need to submit a JP-attested (Certified) copy of your current foreign passport.
  • Proof of Renunciation: You must, however, provide proof of your cancelled Indian passport or a Surrender Certificate.

4. Risks of Not Submitting the Original

If you fail to include your original passport in a postal application, VFS will mark your application as “Incomplete.”

  • The 20-Day Rule: In 2026, if you do not provide the missing original passport within 20 calendar days, VFS will return your application unprocessed.
  • Fee Loss: You may lose the VFS service fee and courier charges even if the application is returned.

5. Summary Checklist for 2026 Submission

  1. Original Indian Passport: Must be included (ensure it has 6+ months validity).
  2. Personal Particulars Form: Filled manually and signed.
  3. Photocopies: One set of high-quality color copies of the first and last pages of your passport.
  4. Visa Status: A recent VEVO check (printed within the last 30 days).

The Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA) creates a significant divide between Business and STEM graduates in 2026. While both benefit from extended stays compared to other nationalities, the “bonus years” for Bachelor’s degrees are strictly gated behind STEM qualifications.

1. 2026 Stay Duration: The AI-ECTA Advantage

In 2026, the AI-ECTA agreement overrides standard 485 durations for Indian passport holders. The biggest difference appears at the Bachelor’s level, where STEM students receive an extra year that Business students do not.

Stay Period Comparison Table (2026)

Qualification LevelBusiness / Arts / OtherSTEM (Science, Tech, Eng, Math)
Bachelor’s Degree2 Years2 Years
Bachelor’s (1st Class Hons)2 Years3 Years (AI-ECTA Benefit)
Master’s (Coursework)3 Years (AI-ECTA)3 Years (AI-ECTA)
Master’s (Research)3 Years (AI-ECTA)4 Years (AI-ECTA)
Doctoral (PhD)4 Years (AI-ECTA)4 Years (AI-ECTA)

2. Key Differences in PR Pathways

For STEM Graduates: The “Fast Track”

STEM graduates (including ICT and AI) have exclusive access to the MATES Visa (Subclass 403) ballot, which offers 3,000 places specifically for Indian professionals.

  • Advantage: STEM roles are currently prioritized in the “Core Skills” stream of the 2026 Skills in Demand visa.
  • Strategy: Use the 3-4 year stay to gain “Specialist” experience, where salaries often exceed the $135,000 high-income threshold for faster PR.

For Business Graduates: The “Points Grind”

Business graduates (Marketing, HR, Finance) do not have a dedicated trade agreement stream like MATES.

  • The Challenge: Most Business roles fall under the “Core Skills” stream, requiring a minimum salary of $79,499 (2026 TSMIT).
  • Strategy: The 3-year AI-ECTA Master’s stay is crucial. It provides the necessary time to complete a Professional Year (for Accountants) or gain the 2–3 years of work experience required to claim 5–10 extra points on the points test.

3. The 2026 “Age 35” Equalizer

Regardless of whether you studied Business or STEM, the 35-year age limit is a hard cap for the Post-Higher Education Work stream in 2026.

  • The Exception: If you are an Indian national over 35, your only 485 pathway is through a Masters by Research or PhD, which allows applications up to age 50.
  • Business Tip: If you are 34, lodge your application immediately upon course completion. A Business Master’s still grants you 3 years of work rights, provided you apply before your 36th birthday.

4. Why “Regional” is the Secret Weapon for Both

In 2026, the $4,600 visa fee is a heavy investment. Both Business and STEM graduates can maximize their ROI by studying in Category 2 or 3 areas (Perth, Adelaide, Geelong).

  • Stacking Benefits: An Indian Master’s graduate in Adelaide gets 3 years (AI-ECTA) + 1-2 years (Regional Extension) = Up to 5 years of work rights.
  • This “Double Extension” is the most cost-effective way to secure PR in 2026.

For Indian graduates in 2026, the answer is a definitive yes. Under the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA), the Master of Professional Accounting (MPA) qualifies for an extended stay, regardless of it being a non-STEM field. While other nationalities saw their Master’s (Coursework) stay periods reduced to 2 years in mid-2024, Indian nationals remain entitled to a 3-year stay for all master’s degrees.

1. Why MPA Qualifies Under AI-ECTA

In 2026, the AI-ECTA “Side Letter” on mobility does not distinguish between STEM and non-STEM for Master’s degrees. It focuses purely on the level of qualification and the nationality of the applicant.

  • Standard 485 Rule (Other Nationalities): 2 Years for Master’s (Coursework).
  • AI-ECTA Rule (Indian Nationalities): 3 Years for Master’s (Coursework, Extended, or Research).

As an MPA is a Master’s (Coursework) degree, Indian passport holders are automatically eligible for the 3-year duration when applying for the Post-Higher Education Work stream.

2. 2026 Eligibility Breakdown for MPA Graduates

CriterionRequirement for Indian MPA Grads
Visa Duration3 Years (Base stay under AI-ECTA)
Age Limit35 Years or Under (Strictly enforced in 2026)
English ScoreIELTS 6.5 (minimum 5.5 in each band) or PTE 55
Test ValidityResults must be less than 12 months old at lodgement
Visa Fee$4,600 AUD (As of March 1, 2026)

3. Can an MPA Graduate Get a 4th Year?

Yes. If you studied your MPA in a Regional Area (Category 2 or 3), you can stack your benefits:

  1. AI-ECTA Stay: You receive your initial 3-year 485 visa.
  2. Regional Extension: In your final year, you apply for the Second Post-Higher Education Work stream
  3. Total Stay: This can grant you a total of 4 years (Category 2) or 5 years (Category 3) in Australia.

4. The “Accounting” PR Strategy for 2026

Since the MPA is a non-STEM degree, you are not eligible for the MATES visa (which is for STEM/ICT only). Your strategy should focus on:

  • Professional Year (PY): Completing a PY in Accounting during your 3-year 485 visa to gain 5 points and a skills assessment.
  • Skills Assessment: Applying for your full assessment with CPA, CAANZ, or IPA as soon as you meet the English and academic requirements.
  • State Nomination: Aiming for a 190 or 491 visa, where Accountants are often prioritized in regional NSW, SA, and WA in 2026.

5. Summary: Common 2026 Misconceptions

“I heard only STEM Master’s get 3 years.”

Correction: For Indian nationals, all Master’s degrees get 3 years. The STEM distinction only applies to Bachelor’s degrees (where only First Class Honours in STEM get 3 years).

The 2026 update to the Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate Visa has introduced a strict age cap that has many Indian applicants worried. In 2026, the short answer is: Yes, the 35-year age limit applies to most Indian AI-ECTA applicants, but there is a major exception for research-based degrees.

While the AI-ECTA agreement grants Indian nationals longer stay periods (3–4 years), it does not automatically exempt them from the standard age criteria.

1. The General Rule for 2026

As of July 1, 2024 (and firmly enforced in 2026), the age limit for the Post-Higher Education Work stream was reduced from 50 to 35 years of age at the time of application.

  • For Indian Bachelor’s Graduates: You must be 35 or under. Even if you have “First Class Honours in STEM” (which qualifies you for a 3-year AI-ECTA stay), you must hit the “Apply” button before your 36th birthday.
  • For Indian Master’s (Coursework) Graduates: You must be 35 or under. You get a 3-year stay under AI-ECTA, but only if you meet the age requirement.

2. The “Over 35” Exceptions (The PhD Loophole)

The Australian Government recognizes that higher research degrees take longer to complete. Therefore, the age limit remains at 50 years of age for specific cohorts, including Indian nationals:

  • Masters by Research Graduates: Eligible up to age 50
  • Doctoral Degree (PhD) Graduates: Eligible up to age 50
  • Hong Kong/BNO Passport Holders: Eligible up to age 50

The 2026 Strategy: If you are an Indian student over 35 currently studying a Master’s by Coursework, you are not eligible for the 485 visa. Your best strategy is to look into a “Masters by Research” or an employer-sponsored 482 visa (which has a higher age limit).

3. AI-ECTA Benefits vs. Age Requirements (2026)

Qualification (Indian Passport)AI-ECTA Stay PeriodAge Limit in 2026
Bachelor (Standard)2 Years35 or under
Bachelor (First Class STEM)3 Years35 or under
Masters (Coursework)3 Years35 or under
Masters (Research)3 YearsUp to 50
PhD / Doctoral4 YearsUp to 50

4. Why the Age Limit is “Strict” in 2026

In 2026, the Department of Home Affairs uses your Date of Application to determine your age.

  • If you apply at 11:59 PM the day before your 36th birthday: You are eligible.
  • If you apply at 12:01 AM on your 36th birthday: You are ineligible, and your $4,600 application fee (2026 price) will not be refunded for “meeting the age criteria.”

5. Summary for Indian Applicants

If you are an Indian national over 35, the AI-ECTA side letter does not save you unless you are a Research student. If you have a Coursework degree and are approaching 36, you must lodge your 485 application immediately.

If you have already passed 35 and have a coursework degree, you should pivot your PR strategy toward Subclass 482 (Employer Sponsorship) or Subclass 491 (Regional), which allow for older applicants.

1. The “Golden Trio” of Time of Application Rules

In 2026, there are three specific documents that must exist before you lodge. If you attach them even one day after lodging, your visa will be refused.

#1. The English Language Rule (1-Year Validity)

  • The Rule: Your English test (IELTS, PTE, etc.) must be taken within 12 months immediately before the day you apply.
  • 2026 Change: The old 3-year validity window is gone. If your test was taken 1 year and 1 day ago, your application is invalid.
  • The Requirement: IELTS 6.5 (minimum 5.5 in each band) or PTE 55 (L: 40, R: 42, W: 41, S: 39).

#2. The AFP Character Check Rule

  • The Rule: You must provide evidence that you have applied for an Australian Federal Police (AFP) check in the 12 months before you lodge.
  • The Mistake: You do not need the result to lodge, but you must have the receipt showing you applied before or on the date of your visa application.

#3. The 6-Month Study Window

  • The Rule: You must have met the Australian Study Requirement in the 6 months immediately before the day you apply.
  • The Start Date: The 6 months starts from your Official Course Completion Date (when your final results were released), NOT your graduation ceremony date.

2. 485 Visa: Time of Application vs. Time of Decision

RequirementMust be met at Time of Application? Can be met at Time of Decision?
Age (Under 35)YESNo
English Test ResultsYESNo
AFP ReceiptYESNo
Health Insurance (OVHC)YESNo
Health ExaminationsNoYES
Passport ValidityYESNo

3. The 2026 “Decision-Ready” Strategy

In 2026, processing times for the Post-Higher Education Work stream have stayed around 4 to 9 months. Because the Department is dealing with higher fees, they are “Quick-Refusing” applications that aren’t Decision-Ready.

  • Step 1: Check your Age. You must be 35 or under on the day you apply (Exceptions: Masters by Research/PhD or HK/BNO passport holders can be under 50). If you turn 36 while the visa is being processed, you are safe—as long as you were 35 on the day of lodgement.
  • Step 2: Secure Health Insurance. You must have a valid Overseas Visitor Health Cover (OVHC) policy active at the time of application. You cannot lodge while still on your Student (OSHC) insurance unless you have evidence that your OVHC starts the next day.

4. Why “Visa Hopping” Rules Change Your Timing

As of July 1, 2024 (and continuing through 2026), you can no longer apply for a Student Visa while onshore on a 485.

  • The Strategy: This makes the “Time of Application” for your 485 the most important moment of your career. If you lodge your 485 with an expired English test, you cannot “fix” it by applying for a new Student visa. You will likely have to leave Australia.

5. Summary Checklist: The “Last 24 Hours” Before Lodging

  1. Check Test Date: Is my PTE/IELTS less than 12 months old?
  2. Check Completion Letter: Is today within 6 months of my final results?
  3. AFP Receipt: Do I have the PDF receipt of my police check application?
  4. Age: Am I still 35 (or eligible for an exemption)?
