Following the March 1, 2026 fee hike, the primary application charge has doubled to $4,600 for most applicants.
A common but fatal error is using the wrong AFP Code on your police check. Because the AFP check is a “Time of Lodgement” requirement, providing an invalid one can make your entire application “invalid,” leading to a refused visa and a non-refundable $4,600 fee.
1. The $4,600 “Code 33” Trap
When applying for an Australian Federal Police (AFP) check for a 485 visa, you must select Code 33 (Immigration/Citizenship – for supply to the Department of Home Affairs).
- The Error: Many students accidentally select Code 20 (Commonwealth Employment) or a general check.
- The Consequence: In 2026, Home Affairs considers any code other than 33 as a failure to meet the character requirement at the time of application.
- The Loss: Because you didn’t meet the mandatory criteria when you clicked “Submit,” the Department can refuse the visa. Under 2026 rules, visa application charges (VAC) are not refunded for refusals caused by applicant error.
2. Why You Can’t “Just Fix It Later”
The 485 visa is a “one-shot” visa. Once you lodge:
- Strict Timing: You must have already applied for the AFP check before you lodge the 485.
- The Evidence Chain: You are required to upload the AFP receipt or certificate as part of the lodgement. If that receipt shows you applied for the wrong code, you have technically not applied for the correct police check.
- No Second Chances: If your student visa has already expired and you are on a Bridging Visa when the refusal happens, you may not be able to lodge a second 485 application due to Section 48 bar restrictions.
3. 2026 Cost Comparison: The Price of a Mistake
| Item | Correct Application | Application with Wrong AFP Code |
| Visa Fee (Primary) | $4,600 | $4,600 (LOST) |
| AFP Check Fee | $56 (Code 33) | $56 (Wrong Code) |
| Total Risk | Successful Visa | $4,656 + Potential Deportation |
4. How to Rescue Your Application (Before it’s too late)
If you have already lodged your 485 visa with the wrong AFP code, do not wait for the Case Officer to find it:
- Apply for a New AFP Immediately: Use Code 33 and get a new receipt.
- Upload a “Notification of Correct Answer”: Use Form 1023 (Notification of Incorrect Answer) or a detailed cover letter in ImmiAccount.
- Explain the Error: Attach the new, correct AFP receipt. While this is not a guarantee (as the requirement was “at time of lodgement”), 2026 Case Officers are more likely to show leniency if you proactively fix the error before they audit the file.
