If you are currently on a Bridging Visa A (BVA) and need to travel home for an emergency, a wedding, or business, you must obtain a Bridging Visa B (BVB) before you leave.

As of May 2026, departing Australia without a BVB will result in the cancellation of your BVA and may prevent you from returning to Australia while your main visa is still processing.

1. 2026 Costs and Processing Times

In 2026, the Department of Home Affairs has streamlined BVB processing, but the “Golden Rule” remains: Apply at least 2–3 weeks before your flight.

  • Application Fee: $190 AUD (non-refundable).
  • Processing Time: Typically 1 to 7 business days, though it can take up to 4 weeks during peak holiday periods (Christmas/New Year).
  • Validity: The travel facility is usually granted for 3 to 12 months depending on your reason for travel.

2. Eligibility Checklist

You can only apply for a BVB if:

  1. You are physically in Australia.
  2. You already hold a Bridging Visa A (BVA) or a Bridging Visa B (BVB)
  3. You have a pending substantive visa application (e.g., Partner 820, Skilled 190/491, or Student 500).
  4. You have a “substantial” reason for travel (Tourism, family visits, business, and emergencies are all generally accepted in 2026).

3. Step-by-Step: Applying via ImmiAccount

The paper-based Form 1006 is now rarely used; 99% of 2026 applications are lodged digitally.

Step 1: Access Your Application

Log in to your ImmiAccount. Locate your pending substantive visa application (the one you are currently waiting for).

Step 2: Select ‘Bridging Visa’

In the ‘Related Links’ or ‘Action’ menu of your main application, click on “Application for a Bridging Visa”. This links the BVB directly to your current case.

Step 3: Provide Travel Evidence

You will be asked for your intended travel dates and your reason for travel. In 2026, it is highly recommended to upload:

  • Flight Itinerary: Tentative dates are okay, but a confirmed booking is stronger.
  • Support Evidence: A wedding invitation, medical letter (for sick relatives), or a brief letter explaining your “need for a mental break/holiday.”

Step 4: Pay and Submit

Pay the $190 fee. You must remain in Australia until the BVB is granted. If you leave while it is still “Received,” you risk being locked out.

4. Critical 2026 “Travel Traps” to Avoid

  • The “Decision” Rule: You must be in Australia both when you apply and when the BVB is granted. If you fly out before the grant email arrives, your BVA may cease.
  • Return Date: You must return to Australia before the “Travel End Date” on your BVB grant letter. If you are stuck overseas past this date, you cannot “extend” a BVB. You would need to apply for a completely different visa (like a Tourist Visa) to get back in.

Work Rights: Your BVB will carry the same work conditions as your BVA. If your BVA allows full work rights (common for Partner and Skilled applicants), your BVB will too.
