Applying for a Bridging Visa B (BVB) is the only way to protect your status if you need to travel internationally while your substantive visa application is being processed. Because your BVA ceases the moment you leave Australia, the BVB acts as your “travel permit” that allows you to return.
Here is how to apply safely to ensure your travel plans and your visa pathway remain secure.
1. Timing is Everything: When to Apply
You should apply for a BVB at least 2 to 4 weeks before your intended departure date.
- The Danger of Last-Minute Applications: Processing times can fluctuate. If you apply only days before your flight, you risk the application being delayed, forcing you to choose between cancelling your trip or losing your visa status if you leave without the BVB.
- Do Not Leave Early: Never depart Australia until you have received formal confirmation that your BVB has been granted.
2. Prepare Your “Substantial Reason” for Travel
The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) requires a compelling reason for your travel. While you do not need to be in a life-or-death crisis, you must provide a clear and documented justification.
- Common Reasons: Attending a family wedding, a medical emergency, important business commitments, or taking a planned vacation that was booked before you knew your visa status would be in flux.
- Documentation: Attach evidence to your application, such as travel itineraries, flight bookings, or a letter from your employer. Providing proof upfront prevents the Department from having to email you to ask for more information, which significantly speeds up approval.
3. How to Lodge the Application
You can lodge a BVB application online via your ImmiAccount.
- Step 1: Log into the ImmiAccount associated with your main visa application.
- Step 2: Select the option to “Apply for a Bridging Visa.”
- Step 3: Choose “Bridging Visa B” (Subclass 020).
- Step 4: Carefully select the dates of travel. Ensure your “period of stay outside Australia” covers the entire duration of your trip, with a buffer of at least 1–2 weeks extra in case of flight cancellations or unexpected delays.
4. What Happens After Approval?
Once your BVB is granted, you will receive a notification.
- Verify the Dates: Double-check the “Must arrive by” date on your grant letter. This is the last day you are permitted to return to Australia.
- The “Travel Facility”: Your BVB essentially “switches on” your ability to re-enter Australia. When you arrive at the airport for your return flight, show your BVB grant notification to the airline staff so they can verify your right to enter Australia.
Crucial Safety Tips
- Do Not Cancel Your BVA: You do not need to cancel your current Bridging Visa A. The BVB will simply be active while you are outside Australia and will effectively replace your need for the BVA during that travel period.
- Maintain Your Substantive Application: The BVB is only a travel mechanism. Ensure you continue to meet all requirements of your original visa application while you are away.
- Check Entry Requirements: Even with a valid BVB, ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months and that you have met any other transit requirements for the countries you are visiting.
