The short answer is no, your PCC address does not have to match your passport address, but there is a major catch: if they don’t match, you must provide additional proof of the “new” address. The address you put on your PCC application is where the police will physically go to verify your character. If that is different from what is printed on your passport, the system treats it as a “Change of Particulars.”

1. The “Present Address” Rule (2026 Update)

The Passport Seva system asks for your Present Address. This is the address where you currently live (if applying in India) or your last known residence where you have “roots” (if applying from abroad).

  • If they match: The process is typically faster because the police station is already linked to your passport file.
  • If they don’t match: You must select the “Yes” button on the “Is present address different from passport?” question. This triggers a requirement for Additional Address Proof.

2. Required Proofs for Address Mismatch

If you are applying for a PCC at an address not listed on your passport, you must provide one of the following 2026-approved documents:

  • Aadhaar Card: The most preferred document (must match the new address).
  • Voter ID / Rent Agreement: Must be a registered agreement, not just a notarized one.
  • Utility Bills: Electricity, water, or gas bills (last 3 months).
  • Parental Proof (Expats Only): If you are abroad, you can use your parent’s address proof plus a notarized letter confirming your relationship.

3. Scenario Guide: Which Address to Use?

Your SituationWhich Address to Use on PCC Form?Impact on Verification

4. The “Police Station” Trap

In 2026, the PCC application requires you to manually select your Police Station

  • Critical: This selection must match the jurisdiction of your Present Address, not your passport address.
  • The Risk: If you put your passport address but select a police station near your new home, the application will be rejected or returned as “Incomplete Jurisdiction.”

5. 2026 “Pro-Tip” for Expats

If you are an Indian national in Australia or the UAE:

  • The police verification will be conducted at the Indian address you provide.

Coordination: Ensure a family member at that Indian address has a copy of your application and your passport (first and last pages). The police often ask for these during the physical visit.
