1. When to Open Your Account?

  • Best Time: 2 weeks to 3 months before your flight. * Why? Most major Australian banks (CommBank, Westpac, ANZ) allow you to apply online from India. You will receive your account number and BSB (Bank State Branch) code immediately, allowing you to transfer funds via flywire or wire transfer before you arrive.

2. Best Banks for Indian Students (2026 Rankings)

While there are many banks, the “Big Four” are most popular because they have the most ATMs and student-specific fee waivers.

3. Documents Required (Checklist)

You do not need an Australian address to start the application from India. You will need:

  • Valid Indian Passport (Current and not expired).
  • Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE): Your university document showing your course and start date.
  • Student Visa (Subclass 500): Proof of your right to stay.
  • Indian PAN Card / Tax Identification Number (TIN): Required for international tax residency regulations.
  • Email Address & Australian Arrival Date: You’ll need to specify which city/branch you will visit to collect your card.

4. Step-by-Step Opening Process

Step 1: Apply Online (From India)

Visit the “International Student” page of your chosen bank. Fill in your passport details and CoE info. You don’t need to deposit money immediately, but you can.

Step 2: Receive Your Account Details

The bank will email you your Account Number and BSB. You can now transfer your tuition or living expenses from your Indian bank (SBI, ICICI, HDFC, etc.) to your new Australian account.

Step 3: The “ID Check” (After Landing)

Once you arrive in Australia, visit your nominated branch in person. This is mandatory. * Bring: Your physical passport and your CoE.

  • Action: The teller will verify your identity and hand you (or mail to you) your Debit Mastercard/Visa.

Step 4: Set Up Your TFN

Once you have your Tax File Number (TFN) from the Australian Tax Office (ATO), log into your banking app and add it. If you don’t do this, the bank is legally required to tax any interest you earn at the highest rate (45%).

5. Important 2026 Banking Tips

  • The “Cardless” Feature: If you choose CommBank, you can use the app to withdraw cash from their ATMs using a “Cardless Cash” code even before your physical debit card arrives in the mail.
  • Remittance Scams: Never use unofficial “Hawala” channels to send money from India. Use your bank’s official SWIFT transfer or verified platforms like Wise or Remitly to ensure your funds aren’t flagged by Australian anti-money laundering systems.
  • Tap-and-Go: Australia is almost 100% cashless. Add your new card to Apple Pay or Google Wallet immediately; you’ll rarely need to carry physical cash.
